Interruption of Play

1.
She came
with the burning
crimson violence
of the dawn

The booming of
her mighty wings
set the crowd reeling

and the high school
football game
came to a sudden
halt

A boy who'd just
caught a pass
into the flat

stood

chin strap unbuckled
chewing his mouth guard
the pigskin in
his crooked arm

forgotten

2.
The grass reached up
craving for her feet
as she settled to earth

a dumb and wonderful
desire for this new
thing, this alien
miracle upon the
evening air

ablaze

with the faultless
grace of eagles
upon her

and as sweaty
linemen knelt before
her, helmets doffed
as the knights of
old might do

as the hoarse throated
bully of an assistant
coach at last falls
silent, flummoxed for
once

everyone knows that the
game will not begin again

that the score will
forever be 13 to 6

and that there is no
normalcy left to go
back to.

Cool poem,

Very interesting poem. It's cool how so few words can create such a big story in my mind.

Provocative prose. Very enchanting.

Paul,

Thanks for coming by. Glad you enjoyed the work. I haven't been writing a lot of "real" poetry for a while, and I thought I'd do one, just for old time's sake.

Doc,

Glad to oblige.

Anonymous,

Thanks for coming over. I appreciate your kind words.

Hullo, Patrick. I've been gone for months, and have just resumed visiting poetry blogs, reading, writing. So elated to read another of your vivid poems. I've always had a soft spot for the narrative form. ;) (I've changed my blogger identity, from "Soulless" to the present one.) Cheers. Hope to chance upon another poem of yours, for old times' sake, whenever you have the time to post one. :)

S.L,

Thanks for coming by. I've been a bad blogger of late, and my updates have been coming much more slowly that I'd like. I'll be around to see what you've been up to soon, though.
